Howard Sizemore el-Yasin is an interdisciplinary artist, as well as curator and educator. His art practice focuses on materiality while investigating marginality and value systems, perceptions of everydayness, as well as racial and gender identities. His studio is based in New Haven, CT and he exhibits nationally. He has received a special commission from CWOS Artspace (New Haven, CT) for an installation & performance project. Selected recent solo and group exhibitions include: Mill Street Project (New Haven, CT) City Gallery (New Haven, CT) Campbellsville University (Campbellsville, KY), Ely Center of Contemporary Art (New Haven, CT), Hygienic Art (New London, CT) Washington Art Association & Gallery (Washington Depot, CT).
el-Yasin holds an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he received several prizes: MFAST Award, Leslie King-Hammond Award, and Faculty and Staff Queer Alliance Award. He also holds an MALS from Wesleyan University, and a BA from New England College.
el-Yasin guest curated Legacy & Rupture at City Gallery (New Haven, CT) in 2021. He has been engaged with New Haven’s arts community for many years, serving in curatorial and advisory roles at Arts & Literature Laboratory, Arts Council of Greater New Haven, ArtSpace, Ely Center of Contemporary Art, Ethnic Heritage Center, and The Institute Library. He has also been a visiting artist at Campbellsville University, University of New Haven, The Galloway School, Education Center for the Arts, and Hamden Hall Country Day School.
Prior to January 2022, el-Yasin has worked in administrative management roles at Yale University—both the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and Yale Art Gallery—for more than two decades.
